11 Clothing Choices That Can Actually Knock Years Off of You

No one is born with the knowledge of what the perfect clothing and overall style works better on them. That takes years of trying out different things to see what looks better on you. Sometimes though, we all need help to see the simple improvements that could take us from “good” to “perfect”.

1. Get the skirt length right

In general, most women look best in a skirt or dress that sits slightly above, in the middle, or slightly below the knee. The hemline should end at the slimmest part of these three points. If you are petite, a knee-length skirt may not be the right choice for you, but an asymmetrical hemline can make you seem taller. On the other hand, shorter ladies may look taller in slightly shorter lengths. If you’re a fan of maxi skirts, make sure to style them right to avoid looking frumpy.

2. Don’t chose bold prints.

Finding nice prints that will look both youthful and sophisticated is extremely hard. Moreover, if the print is oversized, it will make you look larger overall, and this will add some age to your appearance. In contrast, smaller prints or plain textures will make you look slimmer and more youthful.

3. Choose the right eyewear

Choosing a pair of glasses takes some research and knowledge. Most people think that wearing any kind of reading glasses will make them look older no matter what style they choose, so they often opt for the ’’invisible’’ ones. However, rimless or wire-rimmed glasses can actually make you look older. Their minimal design won’t cover up much of your baggy eyes or wrinkles.

Before purchasing a rimless pair, try on a transparent one instead. The shape and the color will hugely depend on your face shape, as well as your hair and skin color, so take your time when buying glasses and choose your next pair wisely.

4. Wear skinny jeans.

Get rid of all jeans that look saggy and weird. Instead, get a pair of skinny jeans. They always look stylish, and easily pair with different style tops. Moreover, they highlight your figure and you will look slimmer and younger in them.

5. Have a bob haircut

Our hair thins over time, and simply cutting off a few inches already adds more volume. Classic bob gives your face a lift, raises your cheekbones, and makes your jawline look higher. Chin-length hair makes a thin face appear oval, and women over 50 should go for very short bob haircuts.

6. Highlight the waist.

As we get older, our bust and tummy seem to merge into one. So highlighting our waist whenever possible is the key to looking younger and fitter. Chose a wide belt, a nipped-in blazer, or a cardigan that ties at the waist to get this effect.

7. Avoid applying too much makeup.

Contouring has become a trend and many of you might regularly do it, thinking it will give you a more refined look. However, this isn’t a good option if you want to look fresh. You should also avoid using mascara on your bottom lashes since this can cast shadows and give you fake dark circles — it can even appear to pull down your eyes.

8. Chose sunglasses carefully.

Correctly chosen sunglasses can greatly modernize your look. For example, cat-eye glasses can correct the problem with lowered outer corners of the eyes and make you look younger.

9. Add a modern twist to retro pieces.

Unless you want to look like you just escaped from a historical movie set, avoid wearing all-vintage ensembles. The head-to-toe vintage look can seem especially strange in the modern office setting. The goal is to show off your ability to mix retro and modern, not to look older than you are. A vintage scarf, retro sunglasses, or a cute vintage hairpiece can look fabulous when combined with contemporary pieces; otherwise, it can make you look dated.

10. Pay attention to the neckline.

You may try to hide an aging neck under your clothes, but in fact, an open neckline will make you look younger and more attractive. Try a V-neck sweater, jacket, or dress with a narrow, ruffled collar.

11. Wear brighter colors.

When we say ’’bright’’ we don’t mean going overboard with pastels. According to some fashion gurus, wearing head-to-toe pastels can make you look less vibrant like you’re fading into the background. And that’s exactly what you want to avoid if you want to look younger. Instead, go for white, turquoise, or pink-violet.

Or, if you can’t resist the pastel tones, combine them with bolder colors or wear something black to add contrast. Also, don’t be afraid of experimenting with unexpected color combinations. Many style experts recommend wearing ’’weird’’ color combos since they can make you look fresh and fashion-forward.
