Sydney Airport Staff Were Baffled When They Saw a Passport Photo of One of the Passengers
Most of us can hardly boast of a successful passport photo. It seems like some kind of magic, but it really is. The document usually shows us a person who only remotely resembles us. And if you have changed your appearance in recent years, the person in the photo will look like a stranger. And this can play a cruel joke on you, as it did on Australian Tomi Grainger.
Passport control incident.
Tomi Grainger was all set to fly from Sydney to Tokyo when an unforeseen turn of events occurred. The electronic system failed to identify Grainger’s face from their passport photo, causing quite an unexpected hiccup. Consequently, the Aussie came perilously close to missing their flight, as airport security officials had to intervene and subject them to interrogation.
Being a blogger, Tomi immediately shared his emotions on social media, “You’ll not believe what just happened to me and I’m low key freaking out, my heart is still pounding.”
“I get ushered to see some security woman who then holds up my passport, looks at my face and she’s like frowning a lot, keeps doing it. Anyway, so she then walks off with my passport and goes to the head of security and the two of them just standing there talking about me, looking at this photo, shaking their head, frowning,” they recalled.
And the airport workers have nothing to blame, because Tomi took their passport photo when they was 22 years old. And that person has really little in common with today’s 29-year-old.
A drastic change in appearance.
All of this happened to Tomi because this person hasn’t wasted any time in the past years. They spent many hours in the gym. In addition, Grainger has spent more than 50,000 dollars on cosmetic procedures and plastic surgery in the last 8 years. Therefore, this situation seemed more like a compliment to them. It showed how much they have changed since the age of 22.
Subscriber reaction.
Fortunately, the airport issue was resolved, allowing Tomi to board their flight. The incident quickly became a viral topic, igniting a prolonged debate on social media, with commentators expressing divergent viewpoints about the situation.
Numerous individuals advised Tomi to update their passport photo and empathized with the airport staff’s response. One person exclaimed, “That’s a completely different person!” while another commented, “When you alter your appearance and they can’t recognize you, that’s the outcome. The airport staff were merely performing their duties.”
The airport also joined the discussion and issued a statement. It said that passport control workers would have a much easier and faster job if passengers had up-to-date photos in their passports. By the way, Tomi says their passport is about to turn 10 years old, which means they will soon get a new document with their recent photo.
Many people spend fabulous sums on plastic surgeons to get the look of their dreams. However, sometimes it is enough to change a hairstyle or eyebrows to look like a different person.
