After Removing 10kg (22lbs), She Finally Feels Like Herself Again

Thaynara Marcondes, a 22-year-old pedagogy student from Mandirituba, Brazil, is recovering from breast reduction surgery after battling gigantomastia, a rare condition that caused her breasts to grow to 10 kilograms (22 pounds). Before her surgery, simple everyday tasks became nearly impossible. Her story sheds light on a condition many people have never heard of.

“I couldn’t even wear a bra anymore,” she says.

The physical and emotional toll was overwhelming. “I ended up putting all my clothes in a bag because nothing fit. One day, I tried on eight shirts and none of them worked. I totally lost it.”

Now, after her surgery in October 2024, Thaynara is looking forward to reclaiming her life. “I want to run, be active, and do a ton of things that I couldn’t do before,” she says with newfound optimism. Simple pleasures like going to the gym and wearing a bikini are finally within reach again.

From struggle to strength

The condition first appeared in February and quickly turned her daily routine into a struggle. Working out became impossible, and even her job as a daycare assistant posed challenges—she couldn’t comfortably hold babies anymore. “I couldn’t take it anymore,” she admits. “I’m skinny, and my back was killing me.” The constant pain and physical limitations took a serious toll on her quality of life.

The surgery cost R$40,000, but for Thaynara, it’s been life-changing. She’s now sharing her recovery journey on social media to raise awareness about gigantomastia and its profound impact on those who live with it. She’s excited to finally feel like herself again and wants other women facing this challenge to know they’re not alone.

What is gigantomastia?

Gigantomastia, also known as breast hypertrophy or macromastia, is a rare condition where the breasts grow excessively large due to an overproduction of breast tissue. This condition most commonly affects people assigned female at birth and can cause significant discomfort, chronic pain, and serious body image issues. For those living with it, the physical and emotional burden can be overwhelming, making even routine activities difficult or impossible.

Doctors were baffled, and the room went silent. But love changes everything. See the incredible transformation of baby Anna, who went from a medical mystery to a gorgeous little girl. Click to see her heartwarming photos today!
