Born Different, She Proved Beauty Has No Rules

This little girl, nicknamed “Voldemort” because she was born without a nose, draws attention for her singular appearance. Her journey encourages us to value the many forms of human beauty and rethink what it truly means to be extraordinary.

She was born with an uncommon medical condition.

Tessa was born with a rare condition called complete congenital arhinia, meaning she was born without a nose. This extremely uncommon anomaly, seen in only a small number of people worldwide, brought unique difficulties from her earliest days. Even so, she refuses to be limited by it and faces life with remarkable joy and energy.

Arhinia occurs when the nose fails to form during fetal development, resulting in its complete absence. In Tessa’s rare situation, this also includes the absence of the olfactory system, the brain area that allows us to perceive smells. Even with these difficulties, her parents always saw her as an exceptionally beautiful and special child.

During an ultrasound, Tessa’s parents, Grainne and Nathan Evans, learned that their baby had a facial anomaly, which stirred a whirlwind of emotions. Finding out at five months pregnant that their daughter would arrive without a nose came as a profound shock. Even so, from that moment on, they resolved to give Tessa all the care and support she could ever need.

Tessa’s journey has involved numerous medical treatments and operations.

Soon after she was born, she was moved to the intensive care unit, where doctors performed a tracheotomy to help her breathe. By the time she was just eleven months old, Tessa also needed cataract surgery, adding even more difficulties to her early childhood.

Two years later, Tessa had cosmetic surgery to place implants under her skin, creating a base for a future artificial nose. Her parents did not make this choice lightly, but they viewed it as a way to slowly refine her features and bring her profile closer to what is considered “normal.” The process required bone and skin grafts, procedures that are usually done in the teenage years once facial growth is complete.

Tessa has faced many physical hardships, but her inner strength remains unshaken.

Tessa has learned to live without a nose, breathing through her mouth and missing the sense of smell that most people rarely even notice. Even so, her bright joy and zest for life powerfully show how determined she is to enjoy every moment.​

“Tessa has proved everybody wrong. She exceeded everybody’s expectations,” Grainne said.​

She also proved that she is a perfect girl. She always lifts the mood whenever she walks into the room. “She walks into any room, and she can lift the room’s mood and make everyone happy,” Nathan added.

Tessa’s story has captured people’s attention worldwide, becoming a source of inspiration for countless individuals confronting their own challenges. Her strength and resilience are a powerful reminder that true beauty transcends physical appearance, residing in the indomitable spirit within each of us. Tessa’s journey acts as a beacon of hope, reinforcing the idea that we can overcome any obstacle with determination, courage, and the support of loved ones.
