This little girl was born without a nose, earning her the nickname “Voldemort”. Yet her story is far more than a headline—it’s a powerful reminder of human resilience and the beauty of uniqueness. Her journey challenges the world to see beyond appearances and to celebrate the extraordinary diversity of the human form.

She was born with a rare condition.

Tessa was born with a rare condition called complete congenital arhinia, which means she was born without a nose. This anomaly, affecting small numbers of people in the world, presented unique challenges for Tessa from the very beginning of her life. However, she has refused to let her condition define her and has embraced life with unmatched enthusiasm.

Arhinia occurs when the nose fails to develop in the womb, resulting in the absence of this facial feature. In Tessa’s case, her condition also means that she does not have the olfactory system, the part of the brain responsible for recognizing smells. Despite the challenges she faced, Tessa’s parents saw her as a beautiful and extraordinary girl.

When Tessa’s parents, Grainne and Nathan Evans, discovered their unborn child’s facial deformity during an ultrasound, they were faced with a wave of emotions. Five months into the pregnancy, they learned that their daughter would be born without a nose. Despite the initial shock, they resolved to provide Tessa with the best possible care and support.

Tessa’s journey has been marked by numerous medical procedures and surgeries.

Tessa’s mom, Grainne, admitted that in the very first moments after her daughter was born, it was hard to come to terms with her condition. “The strongest emotion at that moment was shock, and then -heartbreak.”

In the hospital, the tiny baby was fed through a tube because a tracheostomy stuck out of her neck. Tessa’s dad, Nathan, said that they had to learn about her condition as they went along. “She has no sinuses, no nasal cavity. There’s nothing there, everything is gone. When she sneezed for the first time, it was funny, but then we found out that the sneeze actually comes from her chest. Still, having at least a little bit of normality felt pretty nice.”

The lack of a sense of smell comes with certain dangers. “She can’t smell if something is dangerous, burning, or if food has gone really bad,” Grainne said. “Another child would automatically pick it up and realize it’s not something to put in their mouth, but Tessa doesn’t have that early warning system.”

Two years later, Tessa underwent cosmetic surgery to have prostheses implanted beneath her skin, laying the groundwork for the construction of an artificial nose in the future. The decision to proceed with the surgery was not taken lightly by her parents, but they saw it as an opportunity to gradually enhance Tessa’s appearance over time, making her profile more “normal.” This involved using bone and skin grafts, a process typically recommended during adolescence when the face has finished growing.

Despite these physical hardships, Tessa’s spirit remains unbroken.

Tessa has learned to adapt to a life without a nose, breathing through her mouth and being deprived of the sense of smell that most of us take for granted. Tessa’s infectious joy and zest for life serve as a testament to her unwavering determination to live to the fullest.

Her story has garnered attention from around the world, inspiring countless individuals who face their own challenges. Her strength and resilience remind us that true beauty lies not in physical appearance but in the indomitable spirit that resides within each of us. Tessa’s journey serves as a beacon of hope, reminding us that we can overcome any obstacle with determination, courage, and the support of loved ones.
