Getting up, the actor made his way to collect his prize. Joaquin started by saying sorry for his appearance, especially his sneakers, saying, “This was totally unexpected, as you can see from my shoes. I don’t wear leather and my shoes were sent home on the plane!”

Later at a press conference, Joaquin explained his behavior. The actor doesn’t speak French, and he simply didn’t understand what was going on. He recollects, “I thought it would be really messed up if I went up onstage, and they were like, ‘No, no you don’t have to go up.’ It sounds naive to say it now. Like, of course you go up.”

His reaction left much confusion among his fans
