10+ Facts That Prove Movies Are Hiding More Lies Than We Think

Cinema is art, faking reality. Movie creators can make a silicone baby, make someone look decades older, and create an illusion of people sticking to walls, like a spider, thanks to hands we can’t see. We’re going to show you how certain shots from movies were actually made.

  • If actors in Avengers: Endgame looked in Josh Brolin’s eyes, they would end up looking somewhere at Thanos’ chest because he was a giant. So, the actor had to wear a pole on his back with the cardboard face of Thanos.
  • Also, it’s probably very difficult to act when someone, who you’re supposed to hate, keeps running around the set wearing gray sweatpants and smiling. So, Elizabeth Olsen, who played the grieving Scarlet Witch, couldn’t help but laugh behind the scenes, watching one of the most dramatic scenes in Avengers: Infinity War.
  • Like Thanos, the character of Mark Ruffalo, Hulk, was obviously totally CGI. Everyone knows this, but not everybody realizes what it means. Mark Ruffalo didn’t need any makeup before he appeared on the set.
  • Even though some people say that Tobey Maguire could do all the stunts himself, we understand that neither he, nor Tom Holland, can stick to vertical surfaces. They were literally held by the hands of the staff on the set.
  • The creators of Avengers: Endgame first did the makeup, then added special marks and worked some CGI magic. The result — a very old Captain America. The actor wanted this scene to look even more natural than it did, but was told that the movie would’ve had to last 394,200 hours. In the sequel of Guardians of the Galaxy, Kurt Russel was de-aged.
  • The creator of The Irishman, Martin Scorsese, once said that Marvel movies are not movies, but more like audio-visual entertainment. And then he released his most expensive and longest film yet (3.5 hours). This amount of time allowed them to show the entire path of the main character. So, Robert De Niro first got younger and then older than he really was.
  • If you’ve ever thought about where newborns for movies come from, here is the answer: they are made from silicone. They look very realistic and it’s almost impossible to tell them from a real baby.
  • By the way, muscles for actors are also made from silicone. Of course, actors try to be in shape, but sometimes, their muscles are just not enough for a certain athlete. So, they have to use fake muscles.
  • This is how Ghost Rider was created. It was hard to even recognize Nicolas Cage on the set.
  • In Captain America: The First Avenger, the role of Steve Rogers before the transformation was actually played by 2 actors: Chris Evans for the head and Leander Deeny for the body. Even skinny Deeny was still taller and bigger than the character was supposed to be, so he had to be shrunk too. And in order to make the scenes look very realistic, each of them was shot 3 times: with Evans, with Deeny, and without the actors at all.
  • The crew of Ghost in the Shell had way less work to do. Scarlett Johansson spent almost the entire film in beige sweatpants, except for the scenes where she was injured. These spots were dyed green.
  • The universe of the original Star Wars trilogy was almost completely in George Lucas’ garage. 40 years later, the directors of Avengers: Infinity War raised the bar, creating giant studios. But even they are not always enough, so they end up resorting to green screens and treadmills.
  • Not a single underwater scene in Aquaman was actually shot underwater. The actors were floating on special things, and their hair was added in post-production. But the sea set was actually modeled.
  • Sometimes, big changes can be achieved in simple ways. For example, here’s the transformation of actress Anne Hathaway for WeCrashed. The entire procedure only took 1.5 hours.
  • This is what Margot Robbie’s preparation for I, Tonya looked like. First, they created a more plump version of Tonya, but then decided not to use it. So, they chose a thinner nose and less of the second chin.
  • A lot of attention is paid to food and drinks. For example, in order to show the steam from tea, creators had to put a tampon into the cup. This way, there was more steam.

Movie creators have such an interesting job. Not everyone can come up with an idea to put a cardboard head on an actor to create a giant. The author of this article really enjoyed the cinema infants.
