I Tried to Help on a Flight — and Everything Went Terribly Wrong

At just 22 years old, pedagogy student Thaynara Marcondes from Mandirituba has faced a challenge few can imagine. Diagnosed with gigantomastia, a rare condition that caused her breasts to reach an extraordinary weight of 10 kilograms (22 pounds), she struggled with pain and the simplest daily tasks. Following a breast reduction surgery, Thaynara is now on the path to healing. In this article, we’ll explore her powerful emotional and physical journey — from the hardships she endured to the hopeful steps she’s taking to reclaim her life.
She recalled how frustrating it was when her wardrobe no longer suited her body. “I ended up putting all my clothes in a bag because nothing fit. One day, I tried on eight shirts and none of them worked. I totally lost it.”
Following her surgery in late October, Thaynara is now excited about returning to her workouts and feeling comfortable in a bikini again. “I want to run, be active, and do a ton of things that I couldn’t do before,” she says.
The illness, which began in February 2024, turned even simple routines into challenges — from exercising to lifting children at her daycare job. “I couldn’t take it anymore,” she admits. “I’m skinny, and my back was killing me.” In total, her breasts weighed 10 kilograms.
The procedure, which came with a price tag of R$40,000, completely transformed her life. Now, she’s documenting her recovery online to spread awareness about gigantomastia and the struggles it brings. Feeling like herself once more, she’s eager to show other women that they don’t have to face this battle by themselves.
Gigantomastia — sometimes referred to as breast hypertrophy or macromastia — is an uncommon disorder that causes the breasts to become abnormally large because of excessive breast tissue growth. It primarily occurs in individuals assigned female at birth and often leads to pain, physical discomfort, and challenges with body confidence.
Plastic surgeon Dyson Luis Nicolau dos Santos, who performed Tainara’s operation, noted that gigantomastia can be triggered by several different factors — such as obesity, hormonal changes, diabetes, endocrine conditions, or even certain medications.
In Tainara’s situation, however, the precise reason for her extreme breast growth remains unknown.
The story of her surgery quickly caught the attention of social media users. Many people praised her courage for speaking openly about such a personal challenge, while others shared words of encouragement and wished her a smooth recovery. The overwhelming support highlighted how important it is to raise awareness about conditions like gigantomastia.
