On November 2, Kim Kardashian, 44, attended the 2024 LACMA Art + Film Gala in Los Angeles, immediately turning heads with a symbolic choice of accessory. She wore Princess Diana’s iconic necklace, a move that sparked backlash, with fans criticizing the reality star and calling her fashion choice “vulgar.”

Kim Kardashian paired the antique amethyst necklace, famously worn by the late Princess Diana at a 1987 charity event, with a plunging white gown that highlighted her ample cleavage, complemented by other bold jewelry pieces.

The Keeping Up With the Kardashians alum purchased the accessory at a Sotheby’s auction in 2023 for just under $200,000 and wore it publicly for the first time over the weekend.

Critics were quick to label the mother-of-four as “sleazy” and “tone deaf” for her fashion choice. “She turned it into something vulgar,” one user commented. Another agreed, writing, “Vulgar. Diana didn’t own that necklace; it was borrowed. Nevertheless, Kim Kardashian takes it to the bottom.”

As some commenters rightly pointed out, this isn’t the first time Kim Kardashian has worn something on the red carpet that once belonged to an iconic celebrity of the past. At the Met Gala 2022, the reality TV star famously donned one of Marilyn Monroe’s most famous dresses — a stunning nude gown that holds a significant place in Hollywood history.

In 1962, Marilyn Monroe famously serenaded President John F. Kennedy at Madison Square Garden, singing “Happy Birthday” in a performance that led the gown to be nicknamed the “Happy Birthday, Mr. President dress.” The dress sparked a sensation at the time due to its revealing design and was recently dubbed “the original naked outfit” by Kim Kardashian.

Marilyn Monroe requested her designer to create “a truly historical dress, a dazzling dress that’s one of a kind.” The initial sketch was crafted by Bob Mackie, then a newly graduated designer and the vision was brought to life by designer Jean Louis. Reportedly, Marilyn paid $1,440 for the iconic piece.

Meanwhile, Zendaya dazzled in a barely-there gold dress inspired by Cher’s iconic style, but it was another detail that had fans buzzing.
