It seems that he did the right thing to stay with all of you until the key responsibilities were taken care of. Imagine how it must have been for him to wait. Your mother must have known and at least she had a partner in the demanding task of rearing their children.

That's exactly what my dad did and believe me, it was not pretty. And he had the nerve to tell me that's what he was doing! We never did have a close or good relationship. I wonder why.

So, he supported his children while they were children, and put off his life until then. Not ideal of course, but I think this was very honorable of him.
