You can plan your days, decide how you want to live your life, or where you want to spend your retirement. But in reality life has its own plans for you. Sometimes, it surprises you with amazing moments, and other times, challenges you in unexpected ways.

  • Together for 8 years, married for 3. Cheated on me while draining our bank account and met the girl on Tinder. Just found all this out. Happened while I was sitting at home with our dog, doing his laundry and planning our anniversary trip. © cucumberbun / Reddit
  • I have a half-brother I’ve never met. It turns out we went to elementary school together for two years and had no idea. © gen__andtonic / Reddit
  • I come from a lower-middle-class family. I started working in plumbing. I got married and had a son, but then got divorced. Despite having joint custody, I paid a ton of child support.
I married again but got divorced after six months. Barely making ends meet, I filed for bankruptcy. Life was looking pretty grim.
Then, I met someone new and fell in love. We got married, and to my surprise, she turned out to be a millionaire. I retired at the age of 45 with a fantastic woman who is my best friend and the love of my life. It’s kind of surreal at times. © Walker2012 / Reddit
  • When I was about 19, I met a woman. Long story short, we quickly move in together sharing a bedroom, checking account, the whole deal. Just after our first anniversary, while I was at work, she moved out without telling me. I found out about a month later that she moved out because she married her long-term boyfriend who she was with for 5 years. Her mom had never heard of me, and the older woman I met must have been an actor portraying her mom. Confused the hell out of me for years. © rearwindows / Reddit
  • At 16 I thought I had the flu. Plot twist, cancer! A few weeks later, plot twist, not cancer! Then a year later, plot twist, end stage liver failure and listed for transplant! Was told I wouldn’t see 20. Plot twist, I’m now 25 and healthy! Was horrifically allergic to cats, after transplant I somehow lost the allergy. Plot twist, I’m now the mommy to an awesome ragdoll named Cheddar and a tabby kitten named Calcifer. Thought I’d always live in Illinois, plot twist, now I live in Alaska with my fiancé. © greffedufois / Reddit
  • My mother “disowned” my sister for getting pregnant outside of marriage. (My sister later married him and had three more children with him.)
About twenty years later, we discovered that my mother “had” to marry my father because she got...wait for it...pregnant outside of marriage with my sister. © dramboxf / Reddit
  • I was living in a different city to my ex and would commute back to his place each weekend to spend time with him. Despite me missing him a lot he said he was good with it because my job in the other city was really good and we thought it would only be 6 months or so. One day, I decided I missed him too much, so went home the evening before I was due to drive home to surprise him. Walked in on him hanging with another girl... But the plot twist: turns out we were both dating him for over two years and neither of us realised. Dude was clearly some sort of cheating ninja. © Tinkerella1990 / Reddit
  • My senior project in school was about entrepreneurship, and I had a mentor who was a small business owner that I would interview. The conclusion of my project was that although owning a business is something many people dream of, I had no interest in it after learning how stressful it is.
Fast-forward two years: I now own the business that my mentor owned at the time. I was wrong about my project; the stress is worth it. © MartianPotatoes / Reddit
  • I was dating a girl for several months. She ended up marrying and having a child with my best friend. My best friend married my first love... © RisenFromTheMoshPit / Reddit

Sometimes, you come across stories that feel almost too incredible to be true, like they’ve been lifted right out of a movie screen and into real life. But they’re the kind of stories you can’t keep to yourself -you just have to share them with others, because they remind us all that life can be just as unpredictable and extraordinary as any film.
