A Retired Carpenter From New Zealand Transforms Furniture Into Fairy-Tale Masterpieces

Henk is a 70-year-old man who seems to have a magic touch. With his hands, he makes unique furniture that could be part of the set of any fantasy movie. If you browse through his creations too quickly, it looks like his pieces are flawed, but in reality, they are top-notch and are ready to adorn any home that wants to stand out from the rest.

His talent is in his hands.

For as long as he can remember, Henk has been making furniture. The surprising thing is that no one taught him how to transform his ideas into these beautiful pieces of art; he assures that he’s self-taught. He has probably made so many that it is difficult for him to remember which was the first one, but the inspiration to make these magical pieces came after the earthquake that took place in the city of Christchurch, New Zealand.

The work behind his marvelous masterpieces

To create one of these pieces of furniture, Henk invests 80 to 100 hours of work, and everything is handcrafted. “I asked dad if he has any blueprints for his cupboards. He went to the workshop and came back with a drawing on a scrap piece of paper,” his daughter said. If one thing is clear, it’s that this artist has magic in his hands. All he needs is some wood and to let his imagination run wild to create a work of art. “I draw my idea on a piece of plywood and that becomes the backing piece,” Henk said.

Many woodworkers focus on creating comfortable furniture for the home with some nice features that appeal to people, but Henk wanted to build something you wouldn’t find in a regular store. “I make furniture in this style because I like to make things that are different and out of the ordinary. My work is art, humor, and also something totally useful,” he said.

How to get a fantastic piece of furniture

Maybe you are already picturing how one of these pieces of furniture will look in your room, your children’s room, or somewhere in your home. In that case, Henk’s works have different prices. You can inquire about your favorite piece by sending a message to his official website. As for Henk’s future plans, he wants to enjoy life with his wife, family, and friends, and this does not include opening a store. He prefers working from his own garage.
