Miss Nepal Faces “Cruel” Comments for Her Participation in Miss Universe 2023, Boldly Shuts Down Haters
In the 71-year legacy of Miss Universe, this represents the inaugural involvement of a contestant with plus-sized proportions. The 22-year-old Miss Nepal has made a historic impact by confidently displaying her striking physique. While numerous individuals showed support, commending her beauty, a notable segment of the worldwide audience also voiced criticism. She openly responded to these remarks, providing insights into her personal experiences.
She radiated confidence.
Jane Dipika Garrett conveyed her delightful astonishment at the considerable progress she achieved in the November 2023 competition. With aspirations of pursuing a modeling career, she confronted previous challenges related to low self-esteem. The overwhelmingly positive reception she encountered during the competition proved to be a validating experience, solidifying her newfound confidence in embracing her unique identity.
Garrett remarked that she “did not expect to get that much applause on the stage.” She further elaborated that she “wasn’t expecting anything”, emphasizing that her participation was driven by the desire to represent her country and “women all over the world”.
Opinions were divided.

While receiving accolades globally for her stunning appearance, the 22-year-old acknowledged encountering significant criticism from various quarters. She admitted to receiving less-than-positive messages, some of which were described as “cruel.”
Jane disclosed, “I come across comments like, ’Oh, she’s a whale,’ or ’Why don’t you go to the gym?’ and such remarks.” She went on to express, “It’s like they don’t even know my story. They don’t even know what I’m going through.”
She’s not letting her struggles stop her dreams.
The beauty contestant clarified that she contends with a condition called polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). This medical condition involves the ovaries producing an excess of androgens, surpassing the typical levels found in women. PCOS manifests with various effects, including weight gain, menstrual irregularities, acne, and excess hair growth.
She pointed out that her recent weight gain, attributed to her condition, expressing, ’’That’s also really taken a toll on my mental health and my self-esteem because I thought that I wasn’t good enough or that I wasn’t beautiful enough.’’
However, Garrett embarked on a journey to foster a positive mindset and embrace her own body. Witnessing her radiant confidence on stage makes it clear that she has successfully navigated this path of self-acceptance.
