Every spell, every creature, every hidden passage is etched in the fans’ minds with astonishing precision. But one scene from the first movie, after being watched with subtitles, made a mess. One of Dudley Dursley’s phrases could make him not the kind of person we used to think of him as.

In the famous scene, Dudley Dursley runs up the stairs and stomps to wake up Harry. He shouts, “We’re going to the zoo!” Dursley then goes down the stairs, pushes Harry back to his cupboard and kicks the door.

The captions confused the fans.

Fans admit they always thought Dudley shouted, “Wake up, Potter!” In fact, the subtitles say, “Wake up, cousin!” One user shared this discovery on TikTok, and now fans divided into two camps — the ones who hear “Potter” and others who think it’s “cousin”.

Serious debates broke out.

This case appeared to become a source of hot debates on different social media. Еhe most scrupulous users noted: “I’m hearing cousin in this clip. I hear the ‘c’ sound and an ‘n’ at the end. I can’t hear ‘Potter’ even if I try.”

Some mentioned that this scene is so iconic and now it can ruin the whole childhood: “I always thought it was Potter! My brother and I used to jump down the stairs saying ’wake up Potter!’ when we were little. Those words are so different.”

What do these words really mean.

This scene is not about just mishearing. The meaning of Dudley’s words is really important, because it shows viewers family’s attitude towards Harry.
