A Fisherman Was Stunned to Snap a Video of a Rare Pink Dolphin

The Barbie fever seems to have reached the animal world! Residents of Louisiana, United States, have recently spotted a pink dolphin in their waters. This unique species is in danger of extinction, which means the lucky fisherman who captured it on video got the surprise of a lifetime.

It was the man’s first sighting of a pink dolphin in 20 years of fishing.

Through a Facebook post, fisherman Thurman Gustin revealed he had seen not one, but two pink dolphins in the waters near the Gulf of Mexico, on July 12, 2023. The post featured a video of the sighting which left the man stunned.

In a recent interview, Gustin recalled the moment. “We were fishing down in Louisiana, near a channel that runs down to the Gulf of Mexico when I spotted something under the water that was really big and not the right color,” Gustin said. “I couldn’t believe what I just saw, so I immediately took out my camera and started filming. After a while, it came closer to the boat. There were two of them − a big one and a small one.”

According to Gustin, he had never experienced anything like this in all of his time working as a fisherman, calling the interaction “unbelievable.”

“I go fishing all the time,” Gustin added. “This was my third trip to Louisiana this year. I got very lucky because such spotting is extremely rare. People who have lived their whole lives there haven’t seen anything like this.”

This wasn’t the first time a pink dolphin was seen by people in the same area though.

It’s unclear which pink dolphin Gustin saw, but there’s one popular pink dolphin in those Louisiana waters that has been spotted by locals a few times. The specimen has been lovingly nicknamed “Pinky”.

However, even though “Pinky” is well-known among experts, he will still only be observed from a distance. “We are aware of this pink dolphin and do not plan to engage with it unless it becomes stranded or entangled in some way,” revealed scientist Greg Barsh. “We encourage people to enjoy watching ‘Pinky’ and all dolphins from a distance of at least 50 yards away, and never feed them.”

Although not everyone is as lucky to see a “Pinky”, some still get their fair share of surprises from the animal kingdom. In fact, someone recently saw a raccoon queueing up at a Dunkin’ Donuts. Its well-behaved manners got him a donut at the end. The whole interaction was also caught on video and it’s not surprising the clip went viral.
