14 Times Celebrities’ Heights Turned Out to Be Different From What We’d Expected
The process of moviemaking has lots of different aspects which we as viewers often have no idea about. One of such things is the actors’ height — it affects framing a lot, so sometimes directors use tricks to get the image they want. That’s why we sometimes have no idea how tall celebrities are in real life. We decided to change that and prepared some comparisons.
1. Elizabeth Debicki and Chris Hemsworth are both 6’3″
2. Gillian Anderson
David Duchovny is 5’11¾". It’s not surprising that in order to get a good shot, Gillian Anderson needed to look higher than she was (5’3″). She remembers that when the characters needed to enter a room and show their badges at the same time, she had to jump onto something high to look taller. One time, she turned to the camera quickly and fell down because she had forgotten she was on a box.
3. Sophie Turner and Rami Malek are both 5’9″
4. Robert De Niro
Anne Hathaway is 5 feet 8 inches tall, and her co-star Robert De Niro is 5 feet 9 inches tall. But the problem was that her character was wearing high heels during the entire movie, so in the scenes where Anne and Robert were together, they had to look like in the photo on the right which was taken at the movie premiere. But for some unknown reason, the moviemakers decided that De Niro had to look taller than Hathaway in the movie.
5. Zendaya and Andrew Lincoln are both 5’10″
6. Daniel Radcliffe
This is another time when camera work helped hide a significant height difference. In real life, Daniel Radcliffe is shorter than Emma Watson and Rupert Grint. But according to the star of Harry Potter, it’s not a problem for his career. He said that Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman are very successful actors that are not very tall.
He jokes, “I could play a soldier. The minimum height for a marine is 5 feet, and I’m well above that. I wouldn’t be able to take myself seriously as the quarterback in a football movie, which is my one legitimate gripe.”
7. Emily Ratajkowski and James McAvoy are both 5’7″
8. Ingrid Bergman
If you watch Casablanca carefully, you may notice that the height difference between Ingrid Bergman and Humphrey Bogart is never consistent. The thing is, the director wanted to hide the fact that Bergman was taller than Bogart. To create the illusion of the opposite, the director made Bogart sit on boxes and pillows, and in some scenes, Bergman even had to slouch.
9. Justin Timberlake and Famke Janssen are both 5’11½"
10. Helena Bonham Carter
Helena Bonham Carter is 5 inches shorter than her Suffragette co-star Carey Mulligan. But the moviemakers managed to reduce their height difference to make it minimal.
11. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Nicole Kidman are both 6’1½"
12. Miley Cyrus
In The Last Song, Miley Cyrus seems shorter than Liam Hemsworth, but only a little. The camera hides a big height difference. Cyrus is 5’5″, and Hemsworth is 6’3½".
13. Kevin Hart and Gillian Leigh Anderson are both 5’2¼"
14. Natalie Portman, Thor: Love and Thunder
Natalie Portman and Chris Hemsworth are another on-screen couple who have a significant height difference. To make sure the actors, who are 5 feet 3 inches and 6 feet 3 inches tall respectively, looked well together, they built a path that was one foot off the ground on which Portman had to walk during their scenes together.
