How to Fix a Zipper

How to fix a zipper without replacing it? Everything can be fixed using materials you already have on hand. We prepared some tricks to help you repair a broken zipper.

If the slider is broken

What you need:

• a paper clip, a pin, a zip tie, or a keyring.

How to fix:

If you try to pull on the broken slider with your fingers, it’s unlikely to move. But as soon as you insert an object that is convenient for fastening into it, the slider will move, and the zipper will function as it did before.

If the bottom of the zipper is broken

What you need:

• a drinking straw
• glue
• scissors

How to fix:

Cut a small piece off of the drinking straw. It should be the size of the bottom of the zipper, up to its teeth. Cut the piece lengthwise. Apply glue to the bottom of the zipper and glue the straw on. Press firmly and wait for a little while. When the glue is dry, you can safely slide the zipper into the slider.

What you need:

• hot glue

How to fix:

Apply 2-3 coats of hot glue to the bottom of the zipper. Press down lightly with your fingers to flatten glue a little. Be careful and don’t burn yourself. Wait for the glue to dry and close the zipper.

If the zipper doesn’t fasten and unfasten well

What you need:

• a lip balm, a candle, tweezers, washing liquid, vaseline, or a pencil.

How to fix:

Apply one of the suggested products on both sides of the zipper. To fix the result, slide the slider up and down several times.

If the zipper is constantly unfastening

What you need:

• a keychain ring

How to fix:

Thread the ring into the tip of the slider. Close the zipper and put the ring on the button. Now you can button up your jeans and wear them as usual.

What you need:

• hair spray

How to fix:

Fasten your jeans with the zipper and the button. Spray hairspray on top of the zipper where the slider is located. Let it dry a little.

If the zipper teeth are too worn out

What you need:

• nail polish

How to fix:

Paint the teeth with clear nail polish. Let the layer dry. If you find that the zipper still doesn’t fasten after your first coat of polish, repeat the procedure a couple of times, but let each layer dry before starting the next one.

If the teeth of the zipper are broken

What you need:

• a thread
• a needle
• scissors

How to fix:

Cut off the teeth that are broken or that are about to break with scissors. Close the zipper. Thread the needle and sew the broken part. Sew a slightly larger area so that the slider won’t fall out.

If the zipper doesn’t have a slider stopper

What you need:

• a stapler

How to fix:

Close the zipper. Use a stapler to secure the bracket so that it can lock the slider. If you use this method on clothes, keep in mind that the zipper can no longer be fully opened.

If you need to quickly insert a slider into a zipper

What you need:

• a fork

How to fix:

Attach the slider to the fork by sliding the bottom of the zipper over the fork teeth. Take each side of the zipper, thread it through the slider, and pull down the zipper to close the teeth.
