10 Facts That Prove Angelina Jolie Is a Heaven-Sent Angel
Angelina Jolie is a great actress (she even has an Oscar for her performance in Girl, Interrupted), an exceptional mother, and a star in every sense of the word. But not to be left out is her humanitarian work, which ranges from fighting for people’s rights to adopting three of her children.
It all started with Lara Croft.
In 2000, Angelina Jolie traveled to Cambodia to film the movie Tomb Raider. The country was going through a humanitarian crisis, which left a big mark on the young actress. She began conducting her own research on trouble spots around the world and their refugees. Sometime later, she visited more than 30 countries, providing humanitarian aid to people in need and donating money. Angelina was even named a UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) Goodwill Ambassador.
She loves nature as much as she loves humans.
Angelina adopted her first son from a Cambodian orphanage. Her idea was to preserve a connection with his culture, so she bought a house there. It turned out that the property was next to Samlout National Park, which was constantly raided by poachers who became a real threat to endangered species. Angelina decided to buy the 60 000 hectares of this park and created a beautiful wildlife reserve. She named it The Maddox Jolie Project, and today it’s known as the Maddox Jolie-Pitt Foundation.
The Cambodian government could not allow her actions to go unnoticed and granted her Cambodian citizenship.
Aid to refugees
Since Angelina joined UNHCR in 2001, she has worked steadily over the years to help people in need. One of these groups is refugees. She herself goes to their camps in different countries, improves their living conditions, and provides them with humanitarian aid and development support. She also helps to build schools and health institutions for displaced and repatriated refugees.
For example, in 2010, Angelina donated $75,000 and opened an elementary school for girls in Tangi, Afghanistan. She was concerned that girls would not have the opportunity to get a proper basic education, as there were no facilities for it to happen, and this is not the only school she opened in this country.
She supports many different causes.
Angelina fights tirelessly for opportunities to improve the lives of all people in different areas of their lives. Not only do refugees catch her attention, but she also focuses on raising money to help fight cancer and strives to eliminate extreme poverty. Together with other celebrities, Angelina supports vulnerable children and orphans by providing them with essential services such as health, education, and psycho-social support.
In total, Jolie was involved in about 29 different foundations and organizations aimed at providing peace, education and health support.
She always fights for women’s rights.
She helps displaced people and cares for women that were victims of sexual violence in different parts of the world. She considers it essential to eradicate these problems because this sort of abuse destroys the lives of women, their families, and their communities. In her effort to protect women, she launched the Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict Initiative to investigate and take action against sexual violence.
She reminds women to take care of their health.
Angelina lost her mother and aunt to breast cancer. Unfortunately, she also had a high chance of developing the disease, so she decided to undergo a preventive double mastectomy. She did not want her children to experience the pain of losing their mother to the disease. After this, Jolie spoke openly, discussing her surgery and experience, and tried to encourage women to get tested in time.
She doesn’t hesitate to donate to charities, no matter how much money it costs.
In 2008, Angelina was expecting twins, and everyone was very excited about it. Knox Leon and Vivienne Marcheline Jolie-Pitt were born in August of that year, and several magazines tried to get exclusive, first-hand photos of their children. People and HELLO! decided to team up and purchase the photos for $7 million. This money was donated directly to the Jolie-Pitt Foundation.
She works hard for post-disaster relief.
In 2011, a deadly tornado destroyed around 8,000 homes and 400 businesses in Missouri. Angelina and her ex-husband Brad Pitt donated $500,000 from the Maddox Jolie-Pitt Foundation to help rebuild the city. Before this, in 2010, Haiti experienced a devastating earthquake that took many people’s lives, and the couple donated $1 million to support the victims.
She continues to inspire her children.
Her daughter Zahara Jolie Pitt designed her own jewelry collection together with famed jeweler Robert Procop, with whom she collaborated to create The Zahara Collection. Just as her mother would do, Zahara transferred all the money raised from the collection to the Los Angeles-based House of Ruth Shelters. This non-profit organization helps provide transitional housing for abused women and children.
And she is also inspired by them.
Angelina does everything to be the best mother to her beloved children. Since her son Maddox loves airplanes, she learned to fly!
