I think you need a redo. The last gift someone wants when they are struggling with their weight is a scale, diet advice, ect. A different approach may help you salvage this. apologize and do not make excuses, simple say you did not intend to hurt her feelings. Thank her for helping you, list the things that make a difference. She gave up her independent living, and in some ways your gift suggests she is not capable of taking care of herself. Encourage her to be active in your community, volunteer, help her establish an independent self from your family. She knows her faults and shortcomings, praise her assets. You can turn this around but you do need to understand how offending the gift was-good luck
I Made a Fancy Gift to My MIL, but She Complains I Humiliated Her by It

Relationships with a mother-in-law can be tricky, especially when unspoken moments create tension. One woman recently faced a challenge when a well-meaning gift to her mother-in-law unexpectedly caused hurt feelings. What was intended as a thoughtful gesture quickly became a point of misunderstanding, leaving both women feeling upset and misaligned.

Thank you, Emma, for trusting us with your story. We understand that the gift you thought your mother-in-law would appreciate turned into a source of tension, and that has upset you. We hope the advice we’ve gathered for you will help you maintain peace in the family.
Here are some our advices.
- Acknowledge her feelings. Start by recognizing how she might feel, especially if there’s tension after the gift exchange. For example, say, “I’m sorry if the gift made you uncomfortable; that wasn’t my intention.” Listen to her response without interrupting to show you’re truly hearing her.
- Explain your intentions. After apologizing, gently explain why you chose the gift. Let her know it was meant to support her health and well-being, and you put thought into picking something meaningful, not something to upset her. This can show your care and respect.
- Appreciate her help. Take a moment to thank her for her role in helping with the house. Acknowledge how important her support has been to your family. For example, say, “We couldn’t have done this without you, and we’re so grateful.”
- Discuss health goals respectfully. If healthy living matters to your family, gently share this goal with her. Explain it’s about creating a balanced environment for the kids, not about changing her habits. Show appreciation for her support in creating a positive home.
- Give her time and space. Adjusting to a new living situation takes time. Be patient and kind as she settles in. Allow her space to adjust at her own pace, showing empathy and understanding while letting things unfold naturally.
Raising kids often brings up differing opinions, and these topics can easily spark arguments between parents and sometimes MIL. However, every family has its own way of doing things, and it’s important to communicate openly about expectations and boundaries to avoid unnecessary conflict and build understanding.
